as seen on etsy: enamel flower brooches

ah! you found me hiding out here at my new hosting place. what do you think? if you find anything a bit wonky let me know, some things are still being polished. there are some new features, and some expanded ones too. take some time to have a look around and get involved, if you’d like to be added to the blog roll let me know!

this weeks etsy is one of my favorite accessories – a cheery enamel flower brooch, it always peps me up!

to DIY for: felt flower clips

last weekend i decided to pretty up a pair of plain slip on shoes i have by making up some felt flower clip-on’s. i think felt is just the cutest medium for crafting, if you’re lucky and have access to good quality felt it will have a really nice thickness and will come in just about any color you dream. i got my gorgeous felt from little sparrow.

add a cute button if you like

i made up this bold little flower design and if you’d like to make one too, click here for a printable pattern. the flower clip-on is quick, easy and its versatile. clip it on your hair one day, and the next try it on your lapel. i’m sure you could think of a thousand more uses!

why settle for accessories that look like everyone else’s when you can craft a little something to set you apart from the crowd? and even better, its no trouble if you change your mind: just un-clip them!

did i mention you can make them without sewing? you can either sew them onto the hair clips or use a hot glue gun if you’re staunchly anti-sew.

sewing not necessary!

if you use my pattern, i’d love you to show your results with a link in the comments. happy DIYing!

what i wore: riot christmas party

last friday i accompanied my boy to the riot record’s christmas party. some of you may already know my boyfriend is a music journalist who runs a brain meltingly awesome guitar site. so this is how my twee little self ended up at a metal record label’s party! it wasn’t as brutal as i was warned it might be, so i survived and no bat’s head’s were harmed in the making of this post.

here is what i wore:

psychedelic top: vintage
short cardigan: miss shop, myer
black pencil skirt: american apparel
purple tights: the sock shop
white boots: vintage
purple bag (pictured below): mywalit

isn’t this bag nifty? its just plain purple on the outside but inside oooh! colors! and its really soft leather, and just the right size to hold the bare essentials.

black and white week: graphic fashion

a black and white outfit: always crisp and chic! while crisp and chic is good, i can’t say i’m a chic girl.. let alone crisp (let’s just say i’m not entirely sure where our iron is) and i do love my color. so, i saw this as a challenge: put together some dream outfits that are colorful in other ways.

please click on the image if you want to find out where each piece is from. WARNING! puns ahead.

as seen on etsy: traveling in style

travel has been on my mind a lot recently, what with going back and forth to see my dad as well as planning an epic californian adventure in january (more on that soon!) so its not surprising that my addiction to etsy vintage “window shopping” reflects all this jet-setting i’ve been doing.

while standing by the luggage carousel scouring the parade of black cases for my specially marked black case, i started thinking about all the amazing luggage from the 60s and 70s. sure they had their fair share of plain colored cases, but where are the retina-burning floral options these days? on etsy, it would seem!

collected below are just a selection of the groovy gear you could be chucking your bikini and flip-flops into. click the corresponding links below to see the listings:
and you know who else likes a cute vintage jet set chic? my blog crush: the lovely alex at strawberry lemonade! she’s written some amazing posts on vintage travel style and the samsonite fashionaire (pictured in the middle, up there).

pilgrim’s palette: yellow

it might be an odd thing to say, but i worship color. do you feel like this too? it has such a profound effect on me, when i’m dressing or when i’m working, sometimes i feel a bit like an alchemist. its powerful stuff, this! take some teal, add a dash of rose and a pinch of black – not too much! and voila! the magical combination of colors equal something new and greater than the parts. its power can turn your mood around or evoke memories.

i love that, perhaps more in childhood, our favorite colors help to define us. though i go through phases of staunch loyalty to a certain shade, ultimately i’m a fickle color tart! a year of red, then a season of green, a month of teal… while loving these colors i can’t fathom why anyone would love another color, “how could you possibly like purple” i’d wonder, “it certainly isn’t blue!” and then a month later all i want is to surround myself in purple. (its probably just as well i don’t follow sport, can you imagine the scorn i’d attract for changing my allegiances like this!?)

my color fetish lately is yellow. for such a long time, a true appreciation of yellow elluded me. yellow just seemed so sickly, and ew! yellow snow! being of an english rose complexion it had certainly never entered my wardrobe. but gradually it entered my home, and my heart.

its just so sunny and joyful! but in the right context there is a sophistication to it, and i think that was what i had missed previously. so to celebrate it, in (some of) its shades, here are some outfits that -if i could pull it off without looking ill – i would definitely rock some mellow yellow.

how do you feel about yellow? is it welcome in your home or wardrobe?
