a black and white outfit: always crisp and chic! while crisp and chic is good, i can’t say i’m a chic girl.. let alone crisp (let’s just say i’m not entirely sure where our iron is) and i do love my color. so, i saw this as a challenge: put together some dream outfits that are colorful in other ways.

houndstooth of the baskervilles: return of the sexy librarian!

travel has been on my mind a lot recently, what with going back and forth to see my dad as well as planning an epic californian adventure in january (more on that soon!) so its not surprising that my addiction to etsy vintage “window shopping” reflects all this jet-setting i’ve been doing.

while standing by the luggage carousel scouring the parade of black cases for my specially marked black case, i started thinking about all the amazing luggage from the 60s and 70s. sure they had their fair share of plain colored cases, but where are the retina-burning floral options these days? on etsy, it would seem!

collected below are just a selection of the groovy gear you could be chucking your bikini and flip-flops into. click the corresponding links below to see the listings:
and you know who else likes a cute vintage jet set chic? my blog crush: the lovely alex at strawberry lemonade! she’s written some amazing posts on vintage travel style and the samsonite fashionaire (pictured in the middle, up there).

lovely lashes

a homage to lovely falsies, and the beauties who wear them! this post is dedicated to my lovely friend andie, who rocks an eyelash like nobodies business!

i tried to dig up some history on false eyelashes, but all i could find is the following, on several different sites:

False eyelashes were invented by the American film director D.W. Griffith while he was making his 1916 epic, “Intolerance”. Griffith wanted actress Seena Owen to have lashes that brushed her cheeks, to make her eyes shine larger than life. A wigmaker wove human hair through fine gauze, which was then gummed to Owen’s eyelids. “Intolerance” was critically acclaimed but flopped financially, leaving Griffith with huge debts that he might have been able to settle easily – had he only thought to patent the eyelashes.

via useless facts

shu uemura has become synonymous with lashes (though the range on the website isn’t nearly as big as what’s in store! where are the holographic and rainbow ones?!)

and here’s a video on applying false lashes

so, do you wear false eyelashes? i must admit, as much as i love them, i’m rubbish at applying them (despite much practice) and tend to look more drag than fab. sigh. why is it the things we love most, are the things that don’t suit us!? (see also shift dresses and wide leg jeans)

it might be an odd thing to say, but i worship color. do you feel like this too? it has such a profound effect on me, when i’m dressing or when i’m working, sometimes i feel a bit like an alchemist. its powerful stuff, this! take some teal, add a dash of rose and a pinch of black – not too much! and voila! the magical combination of colors equal something new and greater than the parts. its power can turn your mood around or evoke memories.

i love that, perhaps more in childhood, our favorite colors help to define us. though i go through phases of staunch loyalty to a certain shade, ultimately i’m a fickle color tart! a year of red, then a season of green, a month of teal… while loving these colors i can’t fathom why anyone would love another color, “how could you possibly like purple” i’d wonder, “it certainly isn’t blue!” and then a month later all i want is to surround myself in purple. (its probably just as well i don’t follow sport, can you imagine the scorn i’d attract for changing my allegiances like this!?)

my color fetish lately is yellow. for such a long time, a true appreciation of yellow elluded me. yellow just seemed so sickly, and ew! yellow snow! being of an english rose complexion it had certainly never entered my wardrobe. but gradually it entered my home, and my heart.

its just so sunny and joyful! but in the right context there is a sophistication to it, and i think that was what i had missed previously. so to celebrate it, in (some of) its shades, here are some outfits that -if i could pull it off without looking ill – i would definitely rock some mellow yellow.

how do you feel about yellow? is it welcome in your home or wardrobe?

… perfection, i believe is the word you’re after. Victoire de Castellane’s diorette collection for dior include these breathtakingly bold enamel and jewel encrusted rings. they’ve been around for about a year now, but i just can’t stop looking at them. they really are tiny works of art. well, tiny is perhaps an understatement! the price tags certainly aren’t tiny, and the cheapest little daisy one is $1137. let’s not mention the other prices.

i’ve always felt like i should like Tarina Tarantino. a lot more than i do. i love sparkly, slightly crazy stuff, but nothing of hers has ever really grabbed me until now: the electric koolade bib necklace! and i’m ready to take it all back. just look at it, the colors, the jewels – like dew drops on the flower petals. its like some futuristic mexican art work. too good. in conclusion: yes sir, i like it!

literal cocktail rings! but be warned ladies, if a smooth talking gent presents you with one of piaget’s sex on the beach rings (from their limelight paradise collection) he may be giving you a subtle hint as to what he expects in return! and its not served in a martini glass. and its going to be sandy.

Following on from yesterday’s post on ‘What I’m Coveting’ i thought i’d show you why i’m not coveting much – i already have a lot of lovely things. Things with stories, and memories, and ways of making me smile! Awww. I mean really, i could show you everything i own, because if i didn’t love it, i probably wouldn’t own it, but that would be a blog unto itself, and really, who wants to see an entire week devoted to posts about each pair of my socks? No one. Didn’t think so. So here is a small selection of things about my house which have a place in my heart…

Created with fd’s Flickr Toys

Decole ‘Boulangerie’ mug/teapot Isn’t it a sweetie? I actually have quite a bit of Decole, i just can’t resist their cute products. This is a relatively new addition, but it’s a mug with a lid on top, and the lower part has a strainer and is used as a tea pot! Ugh – i die. No sugar needed in that tea – its sweet enough!

Books! I love me some books. Mostly these are inspiring, shiny-paged, art books. I do read novels, but i love to surround myself with wonderful pictures and as a result i’ve filled two very big bookshelves with mostly art and design books. Its so good to curl up on the sofa and soak in a heavy, glossy paged book!

Psychedelic Scarves My grandma was an amazingly stylish lady, and i’m fortunate enough to have inherited her scarves. Although i rarely wear them, its so good to be able to have them in my closet. Not only are they a reminder of her, they’re an inspiration on their own. Just look at those colors and patterns! And they’re just the tip of the scarf-berg!

Orla Kiely bag I, along with quite a few others, am an Orla addict. Admitting i have a problem is the first step i’ve been told, but i think its her problem. Stop designing great bags, Ms Kiely! (please don’t!! i take it back!) I have a few of her bags but this is my favourite. Its big, and durable and just look at those flowers. It makes my heart smile!

Bedroom art gallery Our bedroom is lovely and sunny (except at night – boom tish) so its a pretty happy place to wake up in. Up there on the wall is a gouache painting from APAK and a plastic picture of a deer and flowers by Swimmer (Japanese kawaii brand) a shadow box paper sculpture by Helen Musselwhite and an original acrylic painting of a boy & a guitar (just like my boy & his guitar) by Lab Partners.

Arabia Enamelware by Kaj Franck Another treasure inherited from my grandmother, the Arabia enamel pot and salad bowl are possibly my favourite things ever. I remember them from such an early age, and unknowingly my drawing style was heavily influenced by Kaj Franck’s designs on them. They’ve served many a delicious meal and i love that something i love so much can be used, and really be a part of my day to day life.

Tchotchkes Just little things, kitschy bits and pieces. I have a lot of them, scattered around, in pigeon holes and little groups. Here we see a leg of a little blue deer, a vintage floral mug, a ‘Friends with You’ blind box toy and a postcard my grandma sent from Hawaii back in the 70s. Oh and the very edge of a ‘Las Vegas’ salt & pepper shaker – sin city seasoning!

Photo Graphis My mum was a graphic designer, back when graphic designing required rulers and pens and real tools. While i inherited a lot of her drawing tools, i must confess the pile of Graphis annuals have been used the most! And how could you resist that cover? Another day i’ll post some scans because there is some really amazing stuff in these books.

Comfy colorful corners Like i said, i could easily post my entire house, but this corner sums it up. Its a happy, comfortable place i can go to and think about what a lucky girl i am to have not only such lovely surroundings, but what adorable people i have to share it with! L.u.c.k.y!
