welcome to 7×7, a new weekly feature on draw! pilgrim, its a ‘week in pictures’ type round up of snippets from my life designed to encourage me to share more of what i’m up to, and take more photos even when i’m not on holiday. as socrates said, the unexamined life is not worth living, while that sounds a bit drastic, i’m terrible at taking photos generally and i’d like to have more to look back on.

i miss room service breakfast! i could eat that plate pictured everyday, forever. i’m normally terrible with breakfast, but having a proper breakfast makes so much difference to how i feel throughout the day. but has that motivated me to make a plate of fruit up like that now i’m home? no. no it hasn’t.

on our last day in LA we had breakfast at swingers diner on beverly blvd and then walked around to melrose ave to cruise shops. we passed by canter’s deli which was on my list of places to visit, but we seriously ran out of time. peeking in the window convinced me we need to visit with empty stomachs next time!

i don’t know what strange gasses they pump through airplanes, but i always seem to forget what’s in my suitcase between point A and point B. so unpacking is especially exciting for me, and as soon as i pull everything out of the case it all comes flooding back- “ah! remember that time we went to amoeba records and thought we’d died and gone to heaven?” “hey look! there’s that crooked street we went down!” etc etc for 3 hours. sigh…

homework is much more fun when you’re doing it in candy colors! it feels so fun to hand write stuff after being conjoined to the keyboard so much of the time! i’m into week 3 of the BYW course with the lovely holly becker, so this notebook is filling up with all kinds of treasures.

i’m not sure if our cat, pringle, is happy we’re home or not… what do you think?

this guys is nuts about stealing my foreign chocolate stash! lucky he’s so cute. how lucky am i to have a boyfriend who buys me jonathan adler for christmas? very.

here’s a little bit of a sneak peak of a work in progress. i hope you like it, the flowers sure are cheering me through the post holiday blues.

i know its been very holiday snap heavy lately, and i promise this ‘slide night’ won’t be lasting too much longer, so in future weeks, real live photos will be more ‘exotic’ posting material.

hoorah! i’m the theme queen for pip’s ‘my place & yours’ this week. despite my boyfriend insisting on seeing peoples’ walk in humidors, or western wings, or orangerys, i have chosen the theme of ‘just five minutes peace.’

where do you retreat to for that sanity-regaining break? i am interested in what or where in your home your sanctuary is.

when i get those golden times of peace and quiet, i like to curl up on my ottoman with a delicious cup of tea of some variety. the beauty of the ottoman is there really is only room for one, which sounds selfish, but anyone with children will tell you personal space is at a premium. it’s in a light corner of the room, so its good to read or sew or crochet in and its just so colorful and happy it never fails to recharge me. did i mention the comfort factor? oh its comfortable. i’ve snoozed there, i’ve daydreamed, i’ve contemplated the ceiling. the restorative powers of this piece of furniture can not be underestimated.

Ottoman

edit: i can’t possibly thank ms sara enough for actually pointing out that i was indeed this week’s theme queen. seems i missed the post on ‘mikes and was very confused that there seemed to be no ‘my place and yours’ this last week. in conclusion: a-doy and three cheers for friends

once again i’m joining in for ‘my place & yours’. how could i resist this week’s theme of ‘my collection’! i love having collections of things. i blame my unfulfilled childhood dreams of being a librarian or a curator. i have my own little wunderkammer here in my lounge room, filled with trinkets and toys and objects that make me smile. sure its a pain to dust, but its the only way i can justify having quite so many useless things!

a consistent presence in these shelves and pigeon holes are apples. since the moment i laid eyes on a dick bruna apple illustration at the age of 1, the simple apple has won my heart. i don’t mind if its green, but honestly i’d prefer it to be red (unless i have to eat it, in which case the greener and tarter the better!) i really like my apples to be plastic (again, unless i have to eat them) or at least japanese or scandinavian. they seem to have a good hold on the basic apple design. maybe because its such a simple, graphic fruit? none of those frou-frou pineapples for the japanese and scandinavians! i really, really like it if my apple is some form of container: jug, mug, box, canister etc. now, that’s satisfaction: apple storage!

in the picture you’ll see an apple desktop trashcan, an apple bottle, an apple bento box, an apple suitcase (not quite full of japanese candy!! nom nom nom) an apple mug in an apple bowl, an apple patch, apple hair bobbles, an apple box, and a fisher price happy apple that makes the sweetest chimes. not pictured above are the BIG apples that hold my son’s toys in the lounge room. unfortunately thats as close as he’ll peacefully get to fruit.

thanks to an ambiguous bible translation from ancient greek, apples have had a bad wrap as being the sinful forbidden fruit. how could a beautiful simple little apple be responsible for all that drama? but maybe its their simple beauty that is precisely their problem, maybe my insatiable lust for anything apple will be my down fall? probably not. but if it is, i’ll happily be the world’s first crazy apple lady.

with halloween just passed i’ve got orange and browns on the brain. is it the mellow colors of autumn or have i just seen too much pumpkin and chocolate? either way etsy has a dearth of vintage treasures in those rusty tones.

autumn colors remind me of my mum. she had beautiful red hair and green eyes. do you remember when there was that trend of ‘getting your colors done’? you would be assigned a season based on skin, hair and eye color. unsurprisingly mum was told she was an ‘autumn’ and her reference was a booklet of business card sized fabric swatches of colors that would suit her. i spent a lot of time playing with the swatches, in waiting rooms, restaurants, queues, and so i have a fond attraction to those colors…and also a fond attraction for pinking sheared scraps of fabric!

how cute is that patchwork canister. eek! patchwork: swoon!
